Position: National Field Services Training Manager

Reports to: Director, National Shelter Outreach

Location: Remote

Position Summary: This position will also play a key role in progressing animal enforcement and animal control policies, strategies, and actions through performing field assessments, certification training and in-field training to align with No-Kill goals and to promote a community-policing culture within animal control. This position is also responsible for assisting in the formal assessment/evaluation of both field and shelter operations in order to increase the agency's effectiveness and lifesaving capacity.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments that identify lifesaving gaps in shelter/animal control operations of strategic partners across the country and create written plans on how shelter/animal control partners can fill identified gaps, increase effectiveness and work collaboratively to achieve lifesaving goals.
  • Under the supervision and leadership of the Director of National Shelter Outreach assist in the planning and implementation of the animal control training academy and related training programs.
  • Work closely with the Community Cat Program staff to provide necessary training to animal control officers located in strategic communities as identified by the CCP staff
  • Provide partners with systems of accountability. Empower partners to achieve goals, hold partners accountable and provide a reporting system of determining measurable successes.
  • Work with the legislation and advocacy team to help identify and monitor legislative needs in key areas and work to develop advocacy action plans
  • Work closely with Network team to recruit partners into the NMHP Network.
  • Work closely with regional directors to support regional priorities, focus and tactics.
  • Conduct regular meetings with staff and other stakeholders to oversee assigned activities.
  • Represents Best Friends at national, regional and state events and conferences including public speaking and making presentations on a variety of topics related to animal control field operations.
  • Identify and cultivate new relationships with animal welfare and rescue community and other stakeholders with the intent to of reaching NK2025.
  • Monitor trends in animal welfare field, and advises on positioning, messaging and programming.
  • Support the Development division to effectively communicate the mission and vision of BF and to cultivate BF resource growth.
  • Ensure work is always consistent with and supportive of the BF organizational brand.
  • Collaborate with Communications division to best insure all program and communications goals are being met.
  • Interact with other BF support services to create and/or support effective processes, technologies, and other official BF operational policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Solid management or leadership experience: 10+ years of proven successful experience, including sheltering/animal control operations.
  • Background in the animal control movement: 5+ years of experience working for or with an animal control organization.
  • Extensive knowledge of major animal welfare/control issues.
  • Experience developing and implementing management policies in a positive and fair manner.  Excellent communication skills and professionalism are necessary for this position.    
  • Experience in collaboration and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Able to maintain clear communication with internal staff on all levels. Proven written and oral presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in various stages of development, each with a unique timeline.
  • Demonstrated ability to affect change/create positive influence on agencies outside of position's direct management control.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint; and other systems as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of time working on the computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Ability to be in a shelter environment and work in the presence of both cats and dogs, including large numbers of cats and dogs as in a shelter setting.
  • Ability to travel via various forms of transportation.
  • Out of town travel for the job is expected to range from 40-60% depending on the location of the jobholder and specific responsibilities and tasks assigned.
  • Ability to drive a Best Friends vehicle when necessary.
