The Digital Advocacy Lead oversees the digital advocacy program's growing online strategy and execution in support of legislative initiatives managed by the Best Friends advocacy team. The ideal candidate for this hands-on role understands how to configure digital tools and work multichannel to help grow and engage our online community in support of local and national legislative issues that are critical to saving the lives of dogs and cats in our nation's shelters - including stopping breed discrimination, combating puppy mills, advocating for community cats, passing No Kill resolutions and more. The Digital Advocacy Lead is responsible for distilling complex legislative ideas down to strong calls to action that inspire and move the public to take action on behalf of animals.


  • Serve as lead for digital advocacy program strategy and execution including effective use of tools, channels, messages, and tactics for engaging the public and key legislative figures toward action.
  • Work closely with advocacy team to increase effectiveness of legislative alerts, tracking performance for program KPIs. Compile and interpret monthly reports on advocacy actions.
  • Work with cross-divisional teams to plan and execute digital marketing campaigns and projects in support of our key initiatives, including web, SEO/SEM, email, social media, and display advertising.
  • Execute all aspects of digital advocacy campaigns to build public support for legislative issues that impact animal welfare issues including but not limited to: settings up alerts, coding and sending advocacy emails, managing social CTAs, supporting digital copywriting.
  • Conduct coalition building, community engagement and local issue education efforts in the digital space.
  • Assist with development and management of internal CRM database, modeling data and identifying targets to grow advocacy lists and measure impact.
  • Create, update, and maintain advocacy web pages. Create and implement strategies to drive traffic and conversion.
  • Implement best practices for mobile-first engagement.
  • Track, measure, and report on the performance of all digital advocacy campaigns and assess against goals.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies to drive innovation and provide thought leadership.
  • Some travel required.

Skills and Experience:

  • 3+ years' experience working in a digital marketing role, ideally in an outreach or advocacy capacity.
  • High-level strategic thinker with a strong grasp of the political process and animal welfare issues who will roll up their sleeves and get the work done.
  • Hands-on experience using online digital advocacy tools. (Luminate, Salsa, Capwiz, etc.)
  • Experience sending email through an ESP, including audience segmentation, basic HTML/CSS, and metrics reporting.
  • Experience in online community management and social media tools to engage audiences and encourage them to take action.
  • A deep understanding of online and offline campaigning and a commitment to empowering people to play an active part in animal welfare causes at the local and national level.
  • Ability to identify and seize opportunities quickly. Online advocacy campaigns are very moment-driven, so you'll be comfortable working and adapting in an agile environment.
  • Excellent persuasive digital writing skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Problem solver with ability to juggle many tasks at once.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of time working on the computer.
