The Annual Giving Officer is the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of Middle Donors giving $5,000 - $24,999 annually, with specific focus on advancing donors to the $10,000 - 24,999 level of giving, or to Major Gifts. This person will be located on the East Coast, preferably in the greater New York area, and will be responsible for increasing and managing ticket and table sales, auction item sales and fulfillment, and the stewardship process for the annual NYC Benefit. This person will work closely with the Direct Response, Digital, Major Gifts and Planned Giving teams to manage the pipeline of donors and ensure all donors feel special and connected to the organization.

The Annual Giving Officer will create meaningful relationships through regular phone, mail and email communications to grow the support of Best Friends. This person must be able to promote the goals of Best Friends, articulate the mission and strategic priorities, and effectively present a case for support. This person will utilize traditional and innovative tactics to upgrade giving, deepen donor commitment, and expand relationships. This person will cultivate and steward the relationships of $10,000-$25,000 donors. This person will attend regional Golden Circle events to connect with portfolio donors and prospects face-to-face. 


  • Cultivate relationships with individual middle donors with personal focus on $10,000-$24,999. Portfolio size in the range of 200-300 donors, with the following minimum communications expected:
    • Periodic personal email update
    • Periodic cultivation calls
    • Periodic personalized mail communications
    • Find new ways to surprise and delight donors and present ideas to team for approval
  • Personal point of contact for BFAS for those giving $10,000 - $24,999 or qualified to give at that level.
  • Solicit and secure unrestricted annual gifts in the range of $5,000 - $24,999. Goal is to turn this into a multi-million dollar program as quickly as possible and true feeder program for Major Giving.
  • Manage and increase table ($10,000-$25,000) and ticket sales ($1,250 each) for NYC Benefit. Manage acknowledgement process and fulfillment for benefit purchases. Track benefit revenue from all sources.
  • Work with Middle Donor Engagement Ambassador on national, regional and Sanctuary events.
  • Work with Major Gifts team and Middle Donor Operations Manager on middle donor/major gifts pipeline management.
  • Make thank you calls to Golden Circle members within 10 days of receiving the gift.
  • Perform post-visit appreciation calls to those who visited the Sanctuary or attended any Golden Circle VIP Experience within a week.
  • Attend Golden Circle Sanctuary or Regional engagement events.
  • Pre/Post calls to those invited/attending events.
  • Work with the Stewardship and Major Gift teams on donor recognition.
  • Leverage technology to customize the portfolio donor experience in mail and email.

Minimum Qualifications, Experience, Education, and Abilities:

  • Embodies the Best Friends Mission and embraces the guiding principles with enthusiasm and positive presence in all interactions; ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' positions on issues.
  • Knowledge of companion animal welfare, sheltering, and rescue work.
  • Bachelor's degree required, CFRE preferred. Minimum 7 years fundraising or equivalent experience, especially with managing personal relationships and increasing donor value.
  • Experience with NYC Benefit table and ticket sales, live and silent auctions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improvement of donor experience.
  • Excellent influence and soft skills, able to bring people along collaboratively and secure commitment.
  • Seasoned professional with experience working independently in a remote team environment with little supervision. Self-motivated.
  • Motivated to track interactions and use data management systems to support relationship growth. Proficiency with Blackbaud CRM.
  • Experience with major donor cultivation and solicitation required.
  • Basic understanding of planned giving vehicles and motivations.
  • Nonprofit events experience required.
  • Commitment to delighting donors through their interactions with Best Friends.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, good listener who is flexible, adaptable and easy to communicate and partner with. Ability to express Best Friends' mission and fundraising objectives orally, and in writing to varied audiences.
  • Above average technical skills in using the Internet and a variety of computer software applications including CRM, word processing, spreadsheets, research, and presentation software, such as Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GoToMeeting, and Google. Comfortable learning new software programs and using online information systems.
  • Valid Driver's License and access to transportation to travel on organization business.
  • Up to 25% travel required.
