Position Summary: Responsible for developing and implementing programs at shelters within selected communities to increase positive outcomes and decrease intake. This includes adoptions, return to field, trap-neuter-return, spay and neuter, and other programing that promotes the shelter's no kill goals.

Essential Duties:

  • In accordance with mutually agreed upon terms, implement and oversee no kill programing in shelters. Must be able to work in shelters in varying environments and resources.
  • Support shelter partners by working directly with shelter staff with day-to-day operations as assigned.
  • Assist shelters in implementing community cat and return to field programs. This may include trapping, transporting, releasing, and monitoring community cat colonies within assigned areas.
  • Responsible for conflict resolution between caregivers and complainants, which includes fielding calls related to shelter community cat programing.
  • Build mutually beneficial relationships with shelter leadership, key staff, and community stakeholders to advance the shelter's lifesaving capacity.
  • In coordination with the marketing team and Shelter Support Manager, assist with the development of resources needed to promote lifesaving programs within the community, animal control agencies, and government including but not limited to: presentations, brochures, postcards, articles and other promotional materials.
  • In coordination with the marketing team develop and implement creative marketing strategies focused on specific shelter needs, which include but not limited to: adoptions, volunteer recruitment, and foster programing. Share interesting stories for the purposes of them being potentially highlighted for our website, social media, email blasts, and Best Friends magazine.
  • Provide and coordinate training for shelter partners consisting of no-kill model, philosophy, and best practices.
  • Maintain monthly statistics and reports on goals within targeted partner shelters, reporting stats as requested by management team.
  • Work and interact with volunteers and visitors to include, but not limited to: training, assigning work, answering questions, promoting Best Friends mission and assisting with their general needs.
  • Support partner shelters so that they can participate in events, including super adoptions, Strut Your Mutt, and other events.
  • In conjunction with other staff as directed to assist shelter partners in increasing numbers of animals being transferred to coalition and network rescue partners.
  • When assigned assist with community cat public assistance hours which includes, but not limited to: educating the public about the benefits of trap-neuter-return, return to field, trap loans, food pantry, and answering general program questions.
  • Assist with department administrative duties when needed such as returning public calls and emails.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required skills and experience:

  • Minimum of two years of experience working in a shelter or related animal field preferred.
  • Strong desire to work with shelter animals, including working with feral and community cats.
  • Provide excellent customer service via phone, email, and in person.
  • Relate and work with a diverse public, which includes shelter staff, community cat caregivers, and other third-party stakeholders.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with ability to successfully juggle multiple tasks and demands. Team player essential.
  • Willing and able to work varied hours and dates which may include holidays and weekends and may be on short notice.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' positions on issues.
  • Understanding of and the ability to educate the public on the benefits of spay/neuter, trap-neuter-return, and return to field.
  • Valid Driver's License. Ability to obtain a medical card with a clean driving record.
  • Experience with and ability to drive large multi-passenger vehicles including vehicles over 10,000 pounds. Be able to transport animals.
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer tools such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, database, internet research, Microsoft programs, etc.
  • Experience with identifying and managing dog and cat behavior, experience with behavior modification preferred.
  • Able to make public presentations and maintain clear and concise communication with others.
  • Knowledgeable of breeds, care giving, and characteristics of animals.
  • Bilingual candidates preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Willing and able to travel and work for extensive periods across the state and elsewhere to support the community cat and shelter outreach initiatives.
  • Must be able to work hands on trapping, transporting, and releasing cats.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including but not limited to: walking, hiking, bending, lifting, carrying, twisting, reaching, stooping, and squatting.
  • Ability to effectively and safely handle a variety of animals wither varying behavior/medical issues and spend extensive periods of time with those animals in close quarters.
