Position: Transport Coordinator, Best Friends - Remote

Reports to: Transport Lead, Best Friends Atlanta

Location: Richmond, VA

FLSA status: Non-Exempt, Part Time

Purpose: The Transport Coordinator is a part of the Transport Team based out of the Atlanta facility. The Atlanta facility serves as a hub for transports throughout the Southeast region. This position is responsible for the implementation, daily functions and growth of the transport program within the Atlanta and Southeast Regional operations. This position focuses on the execution of the transport process. This includes but is not limited to: driving dog and cat transports to receiving shelters, physical transportation of cats and dogs to receiving partners, partner recruitment, transport coordination, maintaining communication with partners regarding transportation and receiving of the pets. The transport program will initially start with a focus on helping our four Atlanta target counties reach and maintain a 90% live release rate and extend to statewide and the Southeast region. The Transport Coordinator will work closely with the Transport Lead in Atlanta.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Take part in all transport program operations, issues and needs, including but not limited to assessment, driving, travel logistics, tracking, prioritization, and onsite streamlining of newly admitted animals for transport.
  • Prep and drive the transport vehicle to receiving organizations. This entails traveling for approximately 2-3 days with extended periods of driving while ensuring the care of animals on the transport vehicle.
  • Maintain frequent communication with receiving partners and source shelters regarding the details of which animals will be transported when as well as their medical and behavioral needs.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team on partner recruitment, program development and research
  • Collaborate with transport team to develop and implement new processes within the transport program to meet lifesaving goals.
  • Train and instruct qualified volunteers on animal specific behavior, transportation protocols, data entry and all other training for transport team recruitment.
  • Conduct driving assessments on new volunteer driver recruits.
  • Oversee the transport vehicles, including regular maintenance, fuel and cleanliness and ensuring animal crates are clean, accounted for and well maintained daily.
  • Work within budgets as directed by the State Engagement Manager and Transport Lead to plan and coordinate volunteer staffing, equipment and program needs.
  • Be attentive to others' needs and willingly assist as required
  • Other duties as assigned by State Engagement Manager and Transport Lead.

Additional Duties:

  • Oversee the appropriate record keeping for the transfer and pulling of animals, including but not limited to: all data entry, historic and current medical history, historic and current factual behavior notes, behavioral assessment, assigned collar color on intake, historic and current vaccines, historic and current medical procedures, spay and neuter exams and verifications, and basic animal info.
  • Maintain a detailed inventory of animals selected for the transport program and their projected outcomes

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Must have valid driver's license and be eligible to drive under Best Friends' insurance policy; CDL license a plus
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate a project with multiple and often changing components
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along well with a variety of people, as well as demonstrate ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Must have the ability to make decisions on behalf of the organization to maintain intake standards for animal admissions approval into the transport program in collaboration with receiving organizations.
  • Knowledgeable of caregiving, basic ability to identify medical and behavioral characteristics of cats and dogs.
  • Must be able to or have a willingness to quickly learn to administer animal vaccinations and microchips, as needed.
  • Must be able to work with, leash, walk and handle all cats and dogs, including those with health concerns/conditions as well as behavior conditions.
  • Resourceful, roll up the sleeves attitude. The successful candidate must have the initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically demonstrate flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.
  • Computer literate: Microsoft Office, Internet, ShelterLuv shelter software, Google docs and mail.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Experience working in or with open intake animal shelters preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift 65 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including, but not limited to: lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning and bending.
  • Work at a computer or driving in a car for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, sitting, arm and hand motion.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Long exposure on a daily basis to dogs and cats of all sizes, temperaments and medical status.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule: includes weekends, night and holiday work.
